Description
Running over the dorsum of the male foot, the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsal surface of the talus and navicular, then courses distally between the tendons toward the first intermetatarsal space. Lateral to it, the arcuate artery crosses the bases of the metatarsals and gives dorsal metatarsal arteries that divide into dorsal digital branches along the proximal phalanges. Superficial dorsal veins form a venous network over the metatarsals, draining medially toward the great saphenous vein and laterally toward the small saphenous vein, while smaller arterioles and capillary beds track along the dorsal fascia between the visible tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. Bones anchor the map. Pedal vasculature is a daily clinical problem. Palpation of the dorsalis pedis pulse, just lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon, remains a standard bedside check for peripheral arterial disease, and this dorsal view clarifies why the pulse can be absent with anatomical variation or arterial occlusion. The illustration also supports procedural planning, since the dorsalis pedis artery and dorsal venous arch are common targets for arterial cannulation, microvascular anastomosis in free-flap surgery, and venous access when more proximal sites are limited. Anatomy and podiatry courses can pair this plate with the bony dorsum to teach surface landmarks, angiosome concepts, and typical arterial and venous pathways from the ankle to the toes. It also fits atlases and review articles on diabetic foot ischemia, dorsal foot lacerations, and postoperative monitoring after forefoot reconstruction where skin perfusion hinges on intact dorsal metatarsal and digital branches.
