Description
Oriented to the dorsal aspect of an adult male pes, the dorsum of the foot is presented with the toes directed anteriorly and the heel positioned posteriorly, allowing the contours of the forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot to be read in true anatomical position. Distally, the phalanges and metatarsophalangeal regions define the digital rays, while the metatarsal shafts course proximally toward the tarsus. Proximal and posterior, the calcaneal region and heel pad are emphasized, with the medial longitudinal arch and lateral border shaping the overall silhouette of the pedal extremity. Dorsal surface morphology matters because it is where clinicians localize swelling, bruising, and deformity after common forefoot and midfoot injuries, including metatarsal fractures and Lisfranc (tarsometatarsal) joint disruption. The posterior heel pad provides a clear teaching point for plantar load distribution and the clinical consequences of fat pad atrophy, which often presents as localized calcaneal pain and altered gait in older or chronically overused feet. Surface landmarks on the dorsum also guide palpation of extensor tendons and assessment of dorsal soft tissue fullness in inflammatory arthropathies. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to orient learners to dorsal foot landmarks, toe alignment, and hindfoot contour, or in podiatry and orthopaedic publications discussing forefoot trauma, midfoot instability, and heel pain syndromes where external morphology supports clinical examination. It also fits patient education materials on footwear, pressure points, and the relationship between arch shape and load-bearing at the heel. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
