Description
Viewed from the medial aspect, the right inferior (lower) lobe is rendered in color with its mediastinal surface facing the viewer and its diaphragmatic base oriented inferiorly, conforming to the dome of the diaphragm. The hilum region lies superior and slightly anterior on this surface, where the bronchus, pulmonary artery, and pulmonary veins would enter or exit in their typical anteroposterior arrangement. Posteriorly, the contour reflects the paravertebral gutter, while the anterior border curves toward the cardiac impression and the region adjacent to the inferior pulmonary ligament. This orientation matters when you need to teach or plan around the medial anatomy of the lower lobe, where pleura, hilum, and diaphragm converge in a tight space. Lower lobe disease often localizes to the basal segments, and the medial surface helps clarify why right-sided basal atelectasis, aspiration pneumonia, or dependent opacities track toward the diaphragmatic pleura in supine patients. It also frames practical thoracic landmarks, including the relationship of the inferior pulmonary vein and inferior pulmonary ligament to lymph node stations encountered during lobectomy or mediastinal staging. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and respiratory system modules to anchor discussion of lobus inferior pulmonis dextri topography, segmental orientation, and diaphragmatic relationships, or in surgical education materials covering VATS right lower lobectomy and inferior hilar dissection. It also suits radiology teaching files that correlate medial lower-lobe anatomy with basilar findings on chest CT and the distribution of pleural effusions along the diaphragmatic recess.
