Description
Anteriorly oriented lungs are rendered with selective color emphasizing the basal segments of the inferior lobes. Each lower lobe’s segmental anatomy is implied beneath the visceral pleura, with the diaphragmatic (inferior) surface forming the base and the costal surface facing forward. Right-left asymmetry is maintained, with the right lung broader and the left lung shaped around the cardiac notch. Clear segmentation. Basal segment identification matters when you are localizing disease within the lower lobes, where gravity-dependent processes often collect. Aspiration pneumonia and dependent atelectasis frequently involve the posterior basal segment in supine patients and the lateral or anterior basal segments in more upright positions, so segmental mapping helps correlate clinical findings with bronchoscopy, chest CT, or segment-directed physiotherapy. For thoracic surgeons, this is the conceptual scaffold for a segmentectomy, planning along intersegmental planes and respecting the segmental bronchi and accompanying pulmonary arterial branches that define resection margins. Pulmonary anatomy and radiology courses can pair this anterior reference with axial CT slices to teach bronchopulmonary segments without losing the global orientation of the lungs. Medical publishers will also find it fits well in chapters on lobar and segmental localization, aspiration patterns, and preoperative planning for anatomic lung resection. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
