Description

Centered in the anterior pelvis, the adult female urinary bladder is presented in anterior section, with the dome (apex) superior and the neck directed inferiorly toward the urethra. The detrusor muscle forms the thick muscular wall, while the urothelial-lined lumen and internal surface contours are exposed by the sectional cut. Posteroinferiorly, the trigone region lies between the ureteric orifices and the internal urethral orifice, a smooth area contrasted against the surrounding mucosal rugae when the bladder is empty. The bladder’s anterior surface faces the pubic symphysis, and its posterior aspect relates to the anterior vaginal wall and cervix/uterus region in typical anatomy. An anterior sectional perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the female bladder neck and trigone, where continence mechanisms and common pathology concentrate. Stress urinary incontinence and many voiding dysfunctions hinge on bladder neck support and urethral alignment, a relationship often clarified by seeing the neck in profile relative to the bladder base. It also gives a clean setup for discussing cystocele (anterior vaginal wall prolapse) and how inferior displacement of the bladder base can distort the vesicourethral junction. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and pelvic anatomy teaching to anchor the terms apex, base (fundus), trigone, and bladder neck, or in urology and urogynecology materials covering cystoscopy orientation, cystitis distribution, and operative landmarks for anti-incontinence procedures. It also fits patient-facing surgical education for pelvic organ prolapse repair, where explaining bladder position relative to the vagina reduces confusion.
