Description
Arising from the superficial temporal artery within the parotid region, the transverse facial artery courses anteriorly across the lateral face, running superficial to the masseter and parallel to the zygomatic arch toward the cheek and maxilla. Superiorly, temporalis fills the temporal fossa while the external ear and parotid gland landmarks occupy the posterolateral field. Yellow facial nerve branches radiate anteriorly from the parotid plexus, and the facial artery and vein travel more anteroinferiorly near the mandibular body and oral commissure. Red arterial and blue venous pathways are shown in the usual surgical plane overlying the mandibular ramus and masticator space. Lateral exposure of the transverse facial artery matters because its course intersects common incisions and dissection planes during parotidectomy, rhytidectomy (facelift), and open reduction of zygomatic arch fractures. A long, superficial arterial segment. That combination makes it a frequent source of troublesome bleeding when elevating skin flaps over the masseter or when working along the anterior border of the parotid, and it also explains why nearby facial nerve branches remain at risk during hemostasis. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy teaching in dental, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery curricula, or as a figure in operative technique guides discussing parotid approaches, superficial temporal system branches, and lateral facial vascular supply. It also supports clinical reference materials on traumatic lacerations of the cheek, flap planning, and safe dissection planes relative to the zygomatic arch and masseter.
