Description
Arising along the posterior pharyngeal wall, the retropharyngeal lymph nodes and their lymphatic vessels sit in the potential retropharyngeal space, anterior to the prevertebral fascia and longus capitis and longus colli muscles. From a posterior perspective, the pharyngeal constrictors form the anterior boundary of the field while the cervical vertebral column and prevertebral musculature lie directly posterior. Laterally, the network relates to the carotid sheath contents, with the common and internal carotid arteries and internal jugular veins running in parallel, and small neural branches tracking between muscular planes toward the superior mediastinum. This posterior view matters because the retropharyngeal nodes drain the nasopharynx, posterior nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and posterior oropharynx, and they often form a pathway for deep neck infection to descend into the danger space toward the mediastinum. Retropharyngeal abscess, more common in children but clinically relevant in adults, can displace the pharyngeal wall anteriorly and threaten the airway, while retropharyngeal nodal metastases are a staging concern in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and other upper aerodigestive tract malignancies. Spatial relationships to the carotid arteries and internal jugular vein are clear. That keeps needle trajectories honest. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching, ENT and oral and maxillofacial surgery atlases, radiology correlations for contrast-enhanced CT and MRI of deep neck spaces, and oncology materials discussing lymphatic drainage patterns and nodal levels. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
