Description

Running from the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis across the temporal fossa, the lateral head dissection layers facial musculature over the calvaria, with the temporalis fanning superior to the zygomatic arch and the masseter occupying the lateral ramus of the mandible. Around the orbit and oral fissure, orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris form concentric sphincters, while the zygomaticus major and minor course inferomedially from the zygomatic bone toward the modiolus. Posteriorly, the auricle and external acoustic meatus sit lateral to the mastoid region, and the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle. Superficial fascia and tendinous/aponeurotic elements are indicated where muscles thin into attachments. Yellow nerve trunks and branches trace the motor and sensory wiring that makes this region clinically legible: the facial nerve (CN VII) arborizes across the cheek and parotid region to supply muscles of expression, while sensory pathways course toward the supraorbital, infraorbital, and mental territories. Vascular channels in red and blue add surgical context, with the superficial temporal vessels ascending anterior to the ear and facial vessels crossing the mandible’s inferior border before running toward the angle of the mouth and lateral nose. A tight neighborhood. This lateral composition maps the danger zones for facelift and parotid procedures, where injury to the temporal and marginal mandibular branches of CN VII can produce brow ptosis or asymmetry of the lower lip, and it also clarifies the muscular vectors involved in temporomandibular disorders and bruxism-related masseter hypertrophy. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching, dental and maxillofacial lectures on mastication, and operative atlases describing parotidectomy, rhytidectomy, or local flap planning where surface landmarks must be reconciled with deep neurovascular anatomy. It also suits patient-facing education on Bell palsy distribution or migraine-related temporalis tenderness when paired with palpation points. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
