Description
Centered within the anterior segment, the minor arterial circle of the iris forms a tight circumferential arcade in the inner third of the iris stroma, concentric with and just peripheral to the pupillary margin. Radial iris arterioles course from the iris root toward the pupil, then anastomose to complete the ring, creating short, segmental branches that run adjacent to the sphincter pupillae. Surrounding context logically includes the cornea anteriorly, the anterior chamber, and the scleral limbus at the iris root where the major arterial circle lies more peripherally. Fine caliber vessels dominate. This anterior perspective matters because the iris vasculature is one of the clearest examples of segmental perfusion in the eye, and it explains why sectoral iris ischemia can follow interruption of the long posterior ciliary arteries or surgical trauma near the iris root. During anterior segment surgery, you plan incisions and manipulations to limit bleeding from fragile iris arterioles and to avoid postoperative hyphema, and you interpret focal transillumination defects or postoperative atony in light of compromised perfusion to the sphincter region. Small ring, big implications. Medical educators use this artwork to teach the vascular anatomy of the iris alongside pupillary physiology and the distinction between the major and minor arterial circles in ophthalmology, optometry, and head and neck anatomy courses. Publishers and clinicians can pair it with discussions of rubeosis iridis, anterior uveitis, and iris neovascularization on slit-lamp exam, or with operative overviews of iridectomy and cataract extraction where bleeding points track to these arcades. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
