Description

Intraparietal sulcus courses in the dorsolateral parietal cortex on a superior (top) view of the human brain, separating the superior parietal lobule medially from the inferior parietal lobule laterally. Anteriorly it lies posterior to the postcentral sulcus and approaches the posterior extent of the central sulcus region, while posteriorly it trends toward the parieto-occipital territory near the precuneus and superior occipital surface. The sulcus forms a long, oblique groove with adjoining gyral crowns on either side that define the parietal lobules in a single frame. Clinically, the intraparietal sulcus anchors discussions of dorsal stream visuomotor integration, including reaching and grasping networks that are commonly mapped in functional neurosurgery and cognitive neuroscience. Lesions in the parietal lobe from middle cerebral artery territory infarct, traumatic contusion, or low-grade glioma can disrupt attention and visually guided hand movements; correlating symptoms with the boundary between superior and inferior parietal lobules is a practical step in localization. Lighting and cortical surface detail in this superior view help you trace the sulcal course without confusion from deeper opercular structures, which makes it well suited for teaching surface anatomy and bedside neuroanatomical reasoning. A key landmark. Use this illustration for neuroanatomy and neuroscience courseware covering parietal lobe topography, for atlases that label sulci and lobules using Terminologia Anatomica, and for clinical slides discussing hemispatial neglect, optic ataxia, or operative planning for parietal craniotomy corridors.
