Description
Lateral profile of the hindfoot captures the posterior contour of the calcaneus (heel bone) and the overlying heel pad, with the calcaneal tuberosity forming the most posterior and inferior prominence. Superior to the heel, the soft-tissue line corresponds to the Achilles (calcaneal) tendon as it descends to its insertion on the posterior calcaneus, while the plantar surface curves anteriorly toward the longitudinal arch where the plantar fascia would originate from the medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity. Anterior and distal to the calcaneus, the lateral border of the midfoot transitions toward the cuboid region and the relaxed toes, placing the hindfoot in anatomic context rather than isolating it. A lateral heel view is where surface anatomy and common pain generators line up cleanly, so you can teach where patients point when they describe “back of heel” versus “under heel” symptoms. Posterior heel pain tracks with Achilles tendinopathy, insertional enthesopathy, or retrocalcaneal bursitis, while plantar heel pain localizes nearer the plantar fascia origin, a frequent finding in plantar fasciitis and calcaneal stress reactions. The partial blue wrap suggests supportive taping or elastic compression, a practical cue when explaining offloading strategies for the Achilles insertion or stabilizing the hindfoot during early rehabilitation. Use this asset in orthopaedic, sports medicine, and podiatry teaching modules to orient learners to hindfoot landmarks before moving to ultrasound or MRI correlations of the calcaneus and Achilles tendon. It also fits well in patient education handouts that demonstrate taping, heel lift placement, and symptom localization in heel pain algorithms.
