Description

Seen from a posterior aspect, the paired cerebral hemispheres dominate the field, with the occipital lobes forming the superior contour and the longitudinal cerebral fissure dividing right and left in the midline. Sulci and gyri define the cortical convolutions, including the posterior portions of the superior, middle, and inferior occipital gyri lateral to the interhemispheric cleft, while the medial surface contour is suggested by the region of the calcarine sulcus and adjacent cuneus and lingual gyrus. Inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis sit posterior to the brainstem, their tightly packed folia contrasting with the broader gyri of the cerebral cortex. Color accents over the superior posterior convexity cue parietal territory near the parieto-occipital region. A posterior view matters when you need clean orientation for the visual cortex and for bedside localization of posterior circulation events. Occipital infarction in the posterior cerebral artery territory maps to calcarine cortex and can produce homonymous hemianopia with macular sparing, while parieto-occipital involvement often aligns with higher-order visuospatial deficits. This angle also supports surgical and radiologic teaching of the occipital horn region and parieto-occipital relationships that guide trajectories for lesions near the atrium of the lateral ventricle. Use this artwork in neuroanatomy and neurosciences curricula to teach gyral patterning, lobar boundaries, and the cerebellum’s posterior relationships, or in clinical neurology materials on visual field defects and stroke localization. It also fits atlases, board review content, and patient-facing explanations of occipital and cerebellar function when a posterior orientation is required. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
