Description

Gross anatomy of the distal large intestine is presented with emphasis on the cecum in the right lower quadrant and the rectum in the midline pelvis. A cross-sectional cut through the bowel wall reveals the mucosa thrown into semilunar folds, the submucosa, the circular and longitudinal layers of the muscularis externa (including the taeniae coli where applicable), and the outer serosal or adventitial covering depending on level. Superior continuity with the ascending colon and inferior continuity toward the anal canal are implied by the tubular lumen and wall stratification. Orientation matters. For teaching, this pairing clarifies why the cecum behaves differently from the rectum in both mobility and disease pattern: the cecum is typically intraperitoneal and distensible, while the rectum sits largely extraperitoneal with a thicker, more constant caliber. That distinction underlies the spread of perforation and abscess in appendicitis, and it frames surgical planes during low anterior resection or abdominoperineal excision where the rectal wall layers and mesorectal envelope guide dissection. Mucosal folds and muscular layers also connect directly to endoscopic and imaging interpretation when differentiating inflammatory change from neoplasm in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and GI block lectures to anchor discussions of large bowel histologic layering without shifting to a microscope slide. It also fits surgical education materials on appendectomy landmarks, rectal cancer staging (depth of mural invasion), and radiology modules that correlate CT or MRI wall thickening with the underlying layers. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
