Description

Along the lateral plantar border of the male foot, the flexor digiti minimi brevis is exposed just deep to the skin, its fusiform belly running anteromedially from the tuberosity region of the fifth metatarsal toward the little toe. Distally, its tendon courses to the base of the proximal phalanx of digit V, lying superficial to the metatarsophalangeal joint capsule and adjacent to the abductor digiti minimi along the lateral margin of the sole. Medial to it, the plantar aponeurosis and more central intrinsic layers would be partly visible by implication, while the fifth metatarsal and phalanges provide bony reference points for the muscle’s origin and insertion. Small structure. Clear landmarks. A plantar exposure of flexor digiti minimi brevis matters when you are teaching the lateral compartment of the first layer of intrinsic foot muscles and how it stabilizes the fifth ray during toe-off. Clinically, lateral plantar pain can reflect overuse or strain of the abductor and flexor digiti minimi units, and the muscle’s relationship to the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint helps explain symptoms around tailor’s bunion (bunionette) and postoperative stiffness after lateral forefoot procedures. Surgeons also use this anatomy when planning limited plantar approaches near the fifth metatarsal head, where soft tissue balance influences alignment of the little toe. Use this artwork in lower-limb gross anatomy labs, podiatry and orthopaedic teaching files on bunionette correction, and medical publishing figures that need a clean plantar map of intrinsic musculature and tendinous insertions at digit V.
