Description
Palmar and dorsal surface landmarks of the female wrist are presented around the distal radius and ulna and the proximal carpus, including the radial and ulnar styloid processes, the ulnar head, and the dorsal tubercle of the radius (Lister tubercle). Along the radial aspect, the anatomical snuffbox lies between the tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis laterally and extensor pollicis longus medially, superficial to the scaphoid and trapezium. Volarly, the flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus tendons (when present) run superficial to the carpal bones and toward the flexor retinaculum, while the flexor carpi ulnaris inserts at the pisiform on the ulnar side. Small structures matter here. Surface anatomy of the wrist is where students learn to translate bone contours into tendon and nerve pathways, and where clinicians localize pain with a thumb-sized palpation. Tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox raises suspicion for scaphoid fracture, a common occult injury that risks avascular necrosis of the proximal pole because of its retrograde blood supply. On the palmar side, the carpal tunnel region is a defined corridor under the flexor retinaculum, and median nerve compression classically produces nocturnal paresthesias in the thumb, index, and middle fingers while sparing the ulnar palm. Use this artwork for upper limb anatomy teaching (osteology and myology of the hand and carpus), for clinical skills manuals covering wrist examination and landmark-guided injections, and for patient education handouts explaining scaphoid injury, De Quervain tenosynovitis at the radial styloid, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
