Description

Centered on the anterior arm, the biceps brachii is isolated in blue with both heads visible: the long head arising proximally from the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and running inferiorly in the intertubercular (bicipital) groove, and the short head originating from the coracoid process on the anterior scapula. Distally, the two bellies converge into a common tendon that crosses the cubital fossa to insert on the radial tuberosity, with the bicipital aponeurosis fanning medially over the forearm flexor compartment. Surrounding landmarks include the deltoid superiorly, pectoralis major on the anterior thorax, and the triceps brachii positioned posterior to the humerus and largely out of view. Bone context is retained at the rib cage, hands, and feet, and the mammary glands are shown superficial to the pectoral region in a female figure. Anterior presentation of the biceps matters because it clarifies what you palpate and what you cut around: the tendon’s course at the shoulder explains anterior shoulder pain from long head biceps tendinopathy and the operative target in tenotomy or tenodesis. At the elbow, the relationship of the distal tendon and aponeurosis to the brachial artery and median nerve frames the mechanism of distal biceps rupture and the care needed during the anterior single-incision repair. A clean flexor compartment landmark. Use it in gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching to tie shoulder and elbow mechanics to visible surface anatomy, and in sports medicine or orthopedic publishing when describing bicipital groove pathology, proximal biceps procedures, or distal tendon rupture patterns in a female patient model. It also fits patient education handouts that need a clear anterior muscle map without sacrificing anatomical naming. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
