Description
Pia mater is rendered as the delicate meningeal layer that tightly invests the cerebral cortex, draping into the sulci and following the contours of the gyri rather than bridging across them. Superficial cerebral arteries (red) and veins (blue) course along the pial surface, then dive toward the cortex at pial-perivascular entry points, while the larger vessels occupy the subarachnoid space just external to the pia. Yellow cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem region and descend inferiorly through the neck, shown in close topographic relationship to the proximal carotid and vertebrobasilar circulation. For teaching, this is the clearest way to separate what belongs to pia from what belongs to dura and arachnoid. The tight pial investment explains why blood in subarachnoid hemorrhage tracks through basal cisterns and sulci around arteries, and why leptomeningeal (pial) collateral pathways matter in acute ischemic stroke when proximal cerebral vessels occlude. It also supports surgical orientation: during pial dissection and sulcal microsurgery, surgeons work in the subarachnoid plane to preserve cortical veins and the pial microvasculature while mobilizing arachnoid adhesions. Small structures, big consequences. Use this asset in neuroanatomy and neuropathology coursework to anchor meningeal layers, sulcal anatomy, and the relationship between pial surfaces and superficial cortical vessels, or in neurosurgery and neuroradiology publications discussing SAH distribution, leptomeningeal enhancement, and pial collateral flow. It also fits patient-facing materials on meningitis and meningeal hemorrhage, where clear separation of membrane layers prevents common misunderstandings.
