Description

Viewed from the cranial base looking superiorly into the posterior cranial fossa, the cerebellum occupies the infratentorial compartment with paired cerebellar hemispheres flanking the midline vermis. Deep to the cerebellar cortex, the branching white matter (arbor vitae) radiates toward the folia, with the vermian midline lying medial to the hemispheric foliation. Surrounding bone contours of the occipital bone form the cerebellar fossae, and the region of the foramen magnum sits inferiorly, orienting the hindbrain within the skull base. This skull base perspective is the one you want when teaching how the posterior fossa constrains pathology: cerebellar edema, hemorrhage, or a posterior fossa mass can crowd the foramen magnum and threaten brainstem compression. It also maps cleanly onto surgical corridors used for cerebellar lesion access, where bony landmarks of the occipital bone and the midline vermis help distinguish safe planes from structures you avoid to reduce postoperative truncal ataxia and cerebellar mutism risk. Small space. Big consequences. Use this artwork in neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses to anchor the relationship between the cerebellum, the posterior cranial fossa, and the skull base apertures transmitting vessels and cranial nerves. It also fits atlases or lecture material covering hindbrain organization (vermis versus hemispheres, cerebellar cortex versus white matter) and clinical teaching on tonsillar herniation, posterior fossa tumors, and suboccipital approaches.
