Description
Surface anatomy of the female external nose is defined by the nasal root (radix nasi) at the junction with the frontal region, the dorsum nasi descending to the tip (apex nasi), and the paired alae forming the lateral margins of the nares. Medially, the columella separates the nostrils and continues superiorly into the soft tissue of the nasal septum, while the alar-facial grooves demarcate the boundary between the ala nasi and the cheek. Superior to inferior, the contour transitions from bony nasal bridge to the cartilaginous vault and then to the lobule, with the nasolabial angle blending into the upper lip and philtrum. Subtle asymmetry is expected. This external view matters because most clinical and procedural decisions around the nose start with what you can measure and mark on the surface. Rhinoplasty planning hinges on accurate appreciation of nasal tip projection, alar base width, dorsal aesthetic lines, and the relationship of the columella and alar rim, all of which reflect the underlying lower lateral cartilages and septal support without exposing them. Surface landmarks also guide safe injection technique for nasal reshaping and help clinicians recognize post-traumatic deformity, such as saddle nose from septal cartilage compromise or alar retraction after scar contracture. Small distances matter. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching, plastic and reconstructive surgery lectures, ENT patient education, and medical illustration plates that need correct female facial proportions for the external nose and nares. It also fits clinical documentation templates for aesthetic consultation and preoperative marking guides. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
