Description

Right lung parenchyma dominates the frame, its pleural surface irregularly mottled with dark tar staining that concentrates along interlobar fissures and tracks toward the medial hilum. From a slightly anterior oblique perspective, the main bronchus and proximal segmental bronchi are exposed centrally, branching inferiorly and laterally into smaller airways that disappear into the stained spongy tissue. Superiorly, the apical region appears more uniformly dusky, while the inferior basal lung shows patchier discoloration across the costal surface. Airway caliber and wall contour are emphasized against the surrounding parenchyma. Chronic tobacco exposure leaves a recognizable gross pattern: anthracotic pigment and tar deposition on pleura and within bronchial mucosa, often paired with mucus hypersecretion and airway wall thickening seen clinically as chronic bronchitis within COPD. That airway centric emphasis matters when teaching why smokers wheeze and cough long before spirometry declares severe obstruction, and why central bronchi remain key landmarks during bronchoscopy and evaluation for endobronchial carcinoma. Texture and surface contrast in this illustration support gross pathology teaching without drifting into histology. Damage is visible at a glance. Pulmonology and pathology faculty can place this illustration alongside normal lung anatomy to anchor discussions of tobacco related airway disease, lung cancer risk, and perioperative respiratory assessment in thoracic surgery or anesthesia curricula. Public health teams also use this kind of anatomical image effectively in smoking cessation counseling materials when explaining why symptoms correlate with airway changes, not just “dirty lungs.” Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
