Description
The maternal torso is shown in profile with the skin and abdominal wall rendered translucent so that the gravid uterus dominates the lower abdomen and pelvis. Inside the amniotic cavity a fetus at approximately 21 weeks of gestation lies in a curled attitude, head directed inferiorly toward the pelvic inlet, with the umbilical cord looping from the abdomen toward the placental attachment on the uterine wall. The urinary bladder sits anterior and inferior to the uterus, the rectum and sacrum lie posteriorly, and the vagina and cervix are visible at the pelvic outlet. The maternal hands rest on the anterior abdomen and lumbar region, giving scale to fundal height at the level of the umbilicus. At mid gestation the fundus typically reaches the umbilicus, and this lateral projection makes the relationship between uterine growth, bladder compression and lumbar lordosis immediately readable. The same anatomy explains common second trimester complaints such as urinary frequency, low back pain and altered posture, and it frames the anatomical basis of the detailed anomaly ultrasound performed around this stage. Fetal position, cord course and placental site shown here are the parameters clinicians document at every routine antenatal scan. This rendering suits antenatal education, midwifery and obstetric nursing teaching, and pregnancy week-by-week series in print or online patient resources. It also serves textbook and journal figures on fetal growth and maternal adaptation, and supports app or poster content for prenatal classes where a clear profile view of mother and fetus is required. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
