Description
A pregnant female figure is shown in profile with the abdominal wall and pelvic soft tissues rendered transparent so the gravid uterus can be read in context. At twelve weeks of gestation the uterus has enlarged beyond the true pelvis and sits behind the anterior abdominal wall, with the fetus curled within the amniotic sac, the umbilical cord coiling toward the developing placenta on the uterine wall. The cervix and vagina continue inferiorly below the uterine body, while the urinary bladder lies anteriorly and the rectum and sigmoid colon pass posteriorly. Loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly by the expanding fundus, and the bony pelvis provides the framing landmark for the whole arrangement. This stage marks the transition from embryonic to fetal life, when organogenesis is largely complete and growth becomes the dominant process. The lateral projection is useful for explaining first-trimester symptoms that follow directly from anatomy: urinary frequency from bladder compression, pelvic pressure, and constipation associated with rectosigmoid displacement. It also illustrates the point at which the uterine fundus becomes palpable at the pubic symphysis, an examination landmark used alongside dating ultrasound and nuchal translucency screening performed around this gestational age. The image suits antenatal teaching materials, midwifery and obstetric nursing curricula, and patient-facing leaflets that track pregnancy week by week. It also serves textbook and journal figures on uterine growth and fetal development, and app or website content where consistent side-view staging across gestational weeks is required. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
