Description

Posteriorly oriented, the superior (upper) extremity of the spleen is presented as the rounded splenic pole lying deep to the left posterior thoracoabdominal wall. Its diaphragmatic surface faces posterolaterally toward the diaphragm and adjacent ribs, while the visceral surface turns anteromedially toward the gastric fundus and left kidney, separated by the peritoneal reflections of the gastrosplenic and splenorenal ligaments. Along the superior border, you would expect shallow notches and the taper toward the posterior extremity. This posterior perspective matters when you are teaching why splenic injury and perisplenic hemorrhage often accompany blunt trauma to the left lower ribs, because the superior splenic pole sits immediately deep to the diaphragm in the upper left quadrant. It also supports operative planning: mobilization during splenectomy frequently begins with controlling the peritoneal attachments at the superior pole, and this is the region where short gastric vessels can be injured during gastrosplenic ligament division. A practical landmark. Use this asset in gross anatomy and surgical anatomy modules on the left upper quadrant, in trauma surgery chapters discussing splenic laceration patterns, and in radiology teaching files when correlating posterior pole relationships on axial CT or oblique ultrasound windows. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
