Description
Viewed from the superior aspect, the pancreatic body (corpus pancreatis) lies transversely across the posterior upper abdomen, extending leftward from the pancreatic neck toward the tail. The anterior surface faces the posterior wall of the lesser sac, while the posterior surface relates directly to major retroperitoneal vessels. Along the superior border you would expect the tortuous course of the splenic artery, with the splenic vein typically running posterior to the gland near the midline. Orientation from above matters because the body is the segment draped over the great vessels, so small shifts in dissection planes change what you can safely expose. Surgeons rely on these relationships during distal pancreatectomy and splenic vessel preservation, where the splenic artery and vein must be separated from the superior and posterior pancreatic surfaces without avulsing short venous tributaries. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma or focal pancreatitis in the body can track posteriorly to involve the splenic vein, contributing to left sided portal hypertension and isolated gastric varices. A tight neighborhood. Use this plate when teaching retroperitoneal anatomy in gross lab, orienting learners to the pancreas in relation to the lesser sac and splenic vessels, or illustrating operative corridors in hepatopancreatobiliary texts and conference slides. It also fits radiology education that links superior anatomical orientation to axial CT interpretation of pancreatic body lesions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
