Description

Seen from the medial aspect, the superior pole of the kidney forms a flattened cranial surface that lies immediately inferior to the suprarenal (adrenal) gland, separated by a thin layer of perirenal fat and renal fascia. Medially, the renal parenchyma approaches the renal sinus and the region of the hilum, where the renal vein typically sits anterior to the renal artery, with the renal pelvis most posterior. The superior pole also relates posteriorly to the diaphragm near the 12th rib, while its anteromedial surface may contact the liver on the right or the stomach and spleen on the left, depending on laterality. A medial perspective matters because it places the upper renal pole in the same mental map used during adrenalectomy and upper pole partial nephrectomy, where the dissection plane between adrenal tissue and the kidney can be confusing. Clear orientation to the renal hilum helps when teaching vascular relationships relevant to hilar clamping and to variants such as multiple renal arteries entering the sinus superiorly. Bleeding here escalates fast. Use this artwork for gross anatomy labs and renal block teaching when introducing perirenal fascia, adrenal relations, and the superior pole as a surgical landmark, or for urology and endocrine surgery atlases discussing adrenal-sparing techniques and upper pole tumor planning. It also supports clinical correlations in cross-sectional anatomy courses where CT or MRI is interpreted along the medial renal contour and the adrenal-kidney interface. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
