Description

Running from the distal oesophagus to the proximal duodenum, the stomach (gaster, ventriculus) is presented in internal sectional view so the wall architecture reads from the luminal surface outward. Gastric rugae fold the mucosa into longitudinal ridges, sitting superficial to the muscularis mucosae and submucosa, while the thicker muscularis externa separates into inner oblique, middle circular, and outer longitudinal layers toward the serosa. Superiorly and to the left, the fundus domes above the gastro-oesophageal junction, with the body continuing inferiorly to the antrum and pyloric canal, where the circular layer condenses into the pyloric sphincter. Sectional anatomy of the stomach wall matters because most diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in gastroenterology hinge on depth. Early gastric carcinoma and dysplasia remain confined to mucosa or submucosa, while transmural extension drives staging, lymphatic spread, and the operative plan for distal versus total gastrectomy. Peptic ulcer disease also follows this layered logic, with posterior wall ulcers threatening the gastroduodenal artery and deeper penetration risking perforation and peritonitis. Depth is the story. Use this plate in abdominal anatomy courses, GI pathology teaching sets, or any publication that needs a clean correlation between gross stomach anatomy and histologic layers without switching modalities. It also supports endoscopy and EUS explanations, where you translate luminal findings into which layer is involved. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
