Description
Seen in lateral perspective, the parotideomasseteric region is organized around the masseter muscle, whose superficial fibers run inferiorly from the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle. Posterior and slightly superior to the masseter sits the parotid gland, filling the retromandibular fossa between the posterior border of the mandibular ramus and the anterior margin of the sternocleidomastoid region. The parotid duct typically leaves the anterior border of the gland, crosses superficially over the masseter, then turns medially to pierce the buccinator opposite the maxillary second molar. Surface landmarks such as the tragus, zygomatic arch, mandibular angle, and the anterior border of the masseter help define the planes of the lateral face. This lateral arrangement matters because the parotid gland is traversed by the facial nerve, and surgeons planning a superficial parotidectomy use the relationship of the gland to the mandibular ramus and zygomatic arch to anticipate where the main trunk and divisions will be encountered. Parotid swelling, sialolithiasis, and neoplasm often present as a posterolateral facial fullness, while masseter hypertrophy and bruxism-related enlargement alter the contour along the mandibular angle and can mimic parotid disease. Clear separation of gland versus muscle at the surface is the practical teaching point. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy courses to teach surface anatomy, in oral and maxillofacial surgery or ENT texts to support parotid duct and parotidectomy discussions, and in clinical education materials addressing parotitis, parotid tumors, or masseteric hypertrophy and botulinum toxin injection planning.
