Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male occiput forms the posterior contour of the head from the vertex down to the nuchal region, where the occipital bone sweeps inferiorly toward the upper cervical spine. The external occipital protuberance sits posterior and slightly inferior to the parietal eminence, with the superior nuchal line coursing laterally toward the mastoid region of the temporal bone. Anterior to the occipital curve, the auricle and external acoustic meatus may mark the transition to the lateral skull base, while the overlying scalp follows the galea aponeurotica across the occipital belly of occipitofrontalis. Clear surface anatomy. This lateral view matters when you need a dependable map for posterior scalp procedures, from occipital nerve blocks to incision planning for posterior fossa approaches. The greater occipital nerve (dorsal ramus of C2) emerges inferior to the superior nuchal line and becomes superficial near the occipital protuberance, a pattern that explains common trigger points in occipital neuralgia and guides needle placement away from the occipital artery. Clinicians also use the occipital curvature to orient head positioning and pressure points, including risk zones for occipital scalp hematoma after blunt trauma. Use it for teaching head and neck surface anatomy in gross anatomy and clinical skills courses, and for illustrating landmarks in anesthesia, pain medicine, emergency medicine, and neurosurgical publications where a lateral occipital profile communicates approach and palpation targets quickly. It also fits patient-facing materials on occipital neuralgia or posterior scalp laceration care when paired with simplified overlays. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
