Description

Anterior surface anatomy of the male inguinal region is presented with the lower anterior abdominal wall continuous into the proximal thigh, framing the groin crease that runs obliquely from the anterior superior iliac spine toward the pubic tubercle. Medially, the pubic symphysis and pubic crest define the midline boundary, while laterally the iliac region transitions toward the hip, with the inguinal (Poupart) ligament course inferred by the skin fold. Inferior to this line, the femoral triangle territory begins, just distal to the inguinal crease. Palpable landmarks in this junctional zone guide both examination and procedures, and this anterior perspective matches how clinicians approach the patient in supine position. The pubic tubercle and anterior superior iliac spine bracket the inguinal ligament, a reference for locating the superficial inguinal ring and distinguishing indirect inguinal hernia trajectories (lateral to the inferior epigastric vessels) from direct hernias (medial to them), even before deeper layers are considered. It is also the same surface map used to estimate the course of the femoral artery just inferior to the midpoint of the inguinal ligament and to avoid the femoral canal when assessing groin masses. A practical region. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching, clinical skills curricula on groin examination and hernia evaluation, and surgical texts introducing inguinal and femoral approaches, including catheter access planning at the groin.
