Description

Running from the inferior margin of the mandible and mastoid region to the superior border of the clavicles, this male neck (collum) overview situates the cervical region between the skull base above and the upper trapezius and shoulder girdle below. Anteriorly, the midline contour corresponds to the laryngeal prominence and thyroid cartilage, with the hyoid bone positioned superior to the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage inferior to it. Laterally, the sternocleidomastoid forms a prominent oblique boundary from mastoid process to sternum and clavicle, separating the anterior cervical triangles from the posterior triangle overlying the cervical fascia and deeper strap and scalene muscle compartments. Posteriorly, the nuchal region blends into the upper trapezius. Surface relationships in the cervical region matter because many high-stakes structures lie only a few millimeters deep to visible landmarks. Palpating the cricoid cartilage (C6) helps orient airway procedures and marks the approximate level where the common carotid artery can be compressed against the carotid tubercle and where the vertebral artery enters the transverse foramen. This is also the corridor for anterior cervical approaches to the spine, where surgeons work between the carotid sheath laterally and the trachea and esophagus medially while protecting the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Use this overview in gross anatomy and head and neck courses to anchor regional triangles, fascial planes, and clinical surface anatomy, and in medical publishing for introductory plates that contextualize deeper dissections of the cervical viscera and neurovascular bundles. It also fits patient-education materials on tracheostomy, central venous access, and cervical lymph node assessment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
