Description
Running along each lateral wall of the uterus, the margo lateralis (uterine border) is rendered with the adjacent perimetrium and underlying myometrium, emphasizing the thickened lateral margins where the broad ligament of the uterus reflects from the uterine corpus toward the pelvic sidewall. Superiorly, the border approaches the uterine horn near the tubal ostium, while inferiorly it continues toward the cervix, where the contour narrows before entering the vaginal portion. Medial to each border lies the uterine cavity axis; lateral to it, the parametrium and the vascular pedicle track cranially along the side of the organ. Attention to the uterine border matters because it is the working corridor for uterine artery control and safe dissection of the broad ligament, with the uterine vessels typically coursing in the cardinal (transverse cervical) ligament toward the cervix before ascending along the uterus. This is the neighborhood where ureteric injury occurs, classically at the point where the ureter passes inferior to the uterine artery near the cervix during hysterectomy or uterine artery ligation. A clean depiction of the lateral margin helps teach why lateral traction on the uterus changes the apparent distance between the uterine border, the uterine artery, and the ureter. Small distances. Big consequences. Use this render in operative anatomy teaching for gynecologic surgery (abdominal, vaginal, and laparoscopic hysterectomy), and in atlas plates or review figures covering the broad ligament, parametrium, and uterine vascular supply. It also fits well in radiology or pelvic anatomy curricula when correlating uterine orientation with lateral supporting structures and vascular bundles.
