Description
Profile contour mapping centers on the male mentum (chin) and adjacent perioral soft tissues, with the labiomental groove marking the transition between the lower lip (labium inferius) and the anterior chin pad. Superficial landmarks logically include the mental protuberance and paired mental tubercles, with the mandibular symphysis lying deep to the midline contour. Laterally, the chin curve blends into the body of the mandible, while superiorly it approaches the lower vermilion border and inferiorly it tapers toward the submental region. Surface anatomy in this area matters because small contour changes often reflect deeper relationships between the mandibular anterior alveolus, the mentalis muscle, and the overlying skin, relationships that are tested during local anesthetic blocks and lower facial procedures. The mental foramen, typically inferior to the second premolar, is a key hidden landmark because the mental nerve can be irritated during implant placement, genioplasty, or trauma, producing lower lip and chin paresthesia. Subtle asymmetry of the mentum also guides orthodontic and maxillofacial assessment of mandibular midline deviation and symphyseal morphology. Small distances. Big consequences. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching for facial surface landmarks, in oral and maxillofacial surgery or orthodontic texts discussing the mandibular symphysis and chin aesthetics, and in patient education materials for mental nerve block, chin augmentation, or post-traumatic sensory symptoms localized to the mental region.
