Description

Centered in the upper abdomen, the transverse colon runs from the right colic (hepatic) flexure to the left colic (splenic) flexure, with sacculations (haustra) and the longitudinal taeniae coli implied by the segmented contour. A focal exophytic mass arises from the mucosa within the transverse colon, projecting into the lumen and narrowing the passage. Inferior continuity carries into the descending colon and sigmoid colon toward the rectum, while proximally the ascending colon leads to the cecum with the vermiform appendix extending from its posteromedial aspect. Transverse colon malignancy often presents later than rectosigmoid disease because early symptoms can be subtle, yet it can still produce iron-deficiency anemia from chronic blood loss or intermittent obstructive episodes as the lesion enlarges and stiffens the bowel wall. Location matters for operative planning: tumors near the middle colic vessels typically fall within the field of an extended right hemicolectomy or transverse colectomy, and lymphatic spread follows the middle colic pedicle along the superior mesenteric pathway. The haustral pattern and segmental layout also support teaching of where the transverse colon sits relative to the foregut and hindgut transition zones. Faculty can drop this artwork directly into GI and oncology lectures when introducing the adenoma-carcinoma sequence, luminal obstruction mechanics, or colonoscopy correlation for a polypoid versus annular lesion. It also suits patient-education brochures, surgical consent materials, and journal figures discussing colectomy margins and nodal basins in transverse colon cancer. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
