Description

Arising deep within the orbit, the levator palpebrae superioris tendon is shown from an anterior perspective as it broadens into the levator aponeurosis superior to the globe and just posterior to the superior orbital rim. Fibers course inferiorly toward the upper eyelid, where the aponeurosis would blend with the superior tarsal plate and the skin of the upper lid, lying superficial to the superior rectus and deep to the orbital septum. Surrounding bony landmarks visible in this frontal composition logically include the frontal bone at the orbital roof, the zygomatic bones laterally, the nasal bones and maxillae medially and inferiorly, and the maxillary dentition. Alignment of the upper cervical spine and hyoid is included as skeletal context. Clean midline orientation. Anterior visualization of the levator complex matters because upper eyelid position depends on the aponeurotic insertion, not just the muscle belly, and aponeurotic dehiscence remains a common mechanism of acquired ptosis after aging, chronic contact lens wear, or periocular surgery. Surgical planning for levator advancement or resection hinges on understanding how the tendon fans out and where it approaches the superior tarsus, as well as its relationship to the orbital septum and preaponeurotic fat, structures often encountered during an upper blepharoplasty incision. This is anatomy you measure, not guess. Ophthalmology and oculoplastics teaching sets will find this view well-suited for explaining the mechanism of eyelid elevation and the anatomical basis of ptosis repair, including preoperative counseling with patients about levator function and expected lid crease formation. It also supports head and neck anatomy curricula that integrate orbital soft tissues with craniofacial skeletal landmarks for surface anatomy and surgical approach orientation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
