Description
Inferior to the male nipple (papilla mammae), the inframammary region spans the lower anterior thoracic wall where skin and superficial fascia overlie the inferior border of pectoralis major and transition onto the upper abdominal wall. Medially, the area approaches the parasternal line and costal cartilages, while laterally it blends toward the anterior axillary fold and the serratus anterior slips along the ribs. Superficial landmarks such as the inframammary crease, the costal margin (arcus costalis), and the xiphisternal region provide orientation in anterior view. Clear surface anatomy. Clinically, this zone is where male gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia are judged by contour relative to the inferior pectoral margin and the presence or absence of a true inframammary fold. Surgeons use these landmarks when planning subcutaneous mastectomy, liposuction, or skin excision patterns, and the rib and costal cartilage relationships matter when extending an incision inferiorly toward the upper rectus sheath. The same territory also intersects common dermatologic and soft tissue findings, including intertrigo, superficial abscesses, and contusions from seatbelt or sports trauma. Use this anterior male thorax reference in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching, in plastic and reconstructive surgery texts covering gynecomastia grading and incision planning, or in clinical education materials that map chest wall landmarks for physical examination and procedural positioning. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
