Description

Running along the lateral border of the ascending colon, the right colic vein courses medially within the mesocolon toward the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), where it joins other tributaries forming the superior mesenteric venous drainage. An anterior perspective also brings the hepatic flexure and proximal transverse colon into view, with haustra and taeniae coli implied by the sacculated contour, and appendices epiploicae visible as small fatty tags on the serosal surface. Venous channels track parallel to the colic wall, following the vascular arcades of the right mesocolon as they converge toward the mesenteric root. Orientation is classic, rectum inferior and midline, colon framing the abdominal cavity. Right colic venous anatomy matters most in right-sided colectomy and extended right hemicolectomy, where central vascular ligation near the SMV demands a clear mental map of venous tributaries and their proximity to the middle colic and ileocolic veins. Venous variants are common, and unrecognized drainage patterns can drive troublesome bleeding during medial-to-lateral dissection along the SMV plane. This is the territory where inadvertent SMV injury becomes a case-defining complication. A short vein with a broad confluence. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and GI surgery teaching to correlate the colon’s surface landmarks with mesenteric venous drainage, and in operative technique manuals to illustrate venous targets and risk zones during D2 to D3 lymphadenectomy for right colon cancer. It also fits radiology and interventional references discussing SMV tributaries in CT venography or mesenteric thrombosis workups. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
