Description
Arising from the right ventricle, the pulmonary trunk courses superiorly and bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries, which pass laterally at the lung hila and then branch alongside the lobar and segmental bronchi. Pulmonary veins converge from the peripheral parenchyma toward the hilum, typically running anterior and inferior to the corresponding pulmonary artery branches before exiting medially to the left atrium. The trachea descends in the midline and divides at the carina into the main bronchi, with the right main bronchus taking a more vertical path into the right lung compared with the more horizontal left. An anterior perspective clarifies the vessel to airway relationship that governs both physiology and procedure, from the close pairing of segmental pulmonary arteries with bronchi to the more variable intersegmental course of the pulmonary veins. That distinction matters when teaching bronchopulmonary segments and when planning segmentectomy, where surgeons often follow a targeted segmental artery and bronchus while preserving adjacent venous drainage planes. It also supports interpretation of pulmonary embolism distribution and CT pulmonary angiography findings, since emboli lodge in lobar and segmental pulmonary arteries rather than in the pulmonary veins. Use this plate for gross anatomy and respiratory blocks when you want students to correlate the bronchial tree with the pulmonary arterial tree and venous return on a single anterior layout. It also suits thoracic surgery and radiology teaching files, case reports, and patient education materials explaining pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, or postoperative anatomy after lobectomy.
