Description
Prominent osteophytes rim the anterior elbow, clustering around the coronoid process of the ulna at the anterior margin of the humeroulnar joint. Superior to this, the distal humerus and its trochlea articulate with the trochlear notch, while irregular new bone projects anteriorly toward the coronoid fossa. Medially, the contour suggests the medial epicondylar region and adjacent joint line; laterally, the radial head and capitellar side of the joint sit slightly distal and lateral to the trochlea. Hard edges. Little clearance. Anterior coronoid osteophytes matter because they are a common mechanical driver of extension loss and painful end range in elbow osteoarthritis, where bony overgrowth impinges during terminal extension and can catch against the coronoid fossa. In valgus extension overload seen in overhead athletes, anterior and posteromedial osteophytes can coexist, and distinguishing coronoid-based spurs from loose bodies changes what you address during arthroscopy or open debridement. Joint-line osteophytes also correlate with capsular contracture, so range-of-motion limitation is rarely just cartilage wear. Orthopedic and sports medicine educators use this anterior perspective when teaching elbow arthroscopy portals, osteocapsular arthroplasty planning, and the bony anatomy that explains a block to extension on exam. It also fits well in rheumatology or radiology materials that pair clinical findings with plain-film features of osteoarthritis, focusing attention on where spurs form around the humeroulnar articulation rather than treating the elbow as a generic hinge.
