Description
Anteriorly, the superficial lymphatic vessels of the shoulder girdle course over the deltoid and pectoral region and converge toward the axilla, where clusters of axillary lymph nodes occupy the fat deep to pectoralis major near the lateral thoracic wall. Along the proximal arm, collecting trunks track proximally toward the humerus and then medially into the axillary basin, in close topographic relationship to the glenohumeral joint and the deltopectoral groove. Expect emphasis on the pectoral (anterior) axillary nodes, with connections toward humeral (lateral) and central nodes before efferents ascend to the apical group beneath the clavicle. Clear drainage pathways. Axillary nodal anatomy is the primary map for staging and operative planning in breast and upper-limb malignancy, and this anterior perspective mirrors what surgeons encounter during sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary dissection. The pectoral nodes receive lymph from the anterior thoracic wall and a large share of breast lymphatics, while the humeral nodes collect from most of the upper limb, a distinction that matters when tracing metastatic spread or explaining why proximal arm melanoma may bypass superficial cubital nodes and declare first in the axilla. Injury, radiotherapy, or removal of these nodes can disrupt lymph return and contribute to secondary lymphedema of the upper extremity. Educators can drop this plate into gross anatomy, clinical anatomy, or oncology modules to anchor lymphatic drainage territories of the shoulder, arm, and chest in a single teaching image. It also fits cleanly in surgical atlases, breast cancer staging references, and patient-facing materials that explain axillary node sampling and postoperative swelling risk. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
