Description
Arising from the superior mesenteric artery anterior to the abdominal aorta, the jejunal and ileal arteries course within the posterior layer of the mesentery toward the left upper and right lower quadrants, respectively. Multiple anastomotic loops form the arterial arcades, with straight vasa recta extending distally to the jejunum and ileum along the mesenteric border. Posteriorly, the aorta and inferior vena cava sit midline against the vertebral column, while the kidneys lie retroperitoneal and lateral, framing the mesenteric root behind the coiled small bowel and haustrated colon. For teaching and procedural planning, a posterior perspective clarifies how the mesenteric vessels relate to fixed retroperitoneal landmarks and why the jejunum typically shows fewer arcades with longer vasa recta, whereas the ileum tends toward multiple arcades with shorter vasa recta. These patterns matter in acute mesenteric ischemia and in superior mesenteric artery embolic events, where the collateral capacity of the arcades can influence segmental vulnerability and the length of bowel at risk. Clear separation of arteries (red) from companion mesenteric veins (blue) also supports understanding of venous congestion and strangulating obstruction, where compromised outflow can precede arterial failure. Surgical educators can pair this plate with discussions of small-bowel resection, mesenteric defect closure, and lymphadenectomy for Crohn disease or small-bowel tumors, where identifying and preserving specific jejunal and ileal branches limits devascularization. It also fits abdominal anatomy coursework and atlas-style publishing that needs an explicit map of arterial arcades against the posterior abdominal wall and colon.
