Description

Arising between the thoracic wall and the proximal humerus, the female axilla is presented from a posterior perspective with the posterior axillary fold forming a clear inferolateral contour. Latissimus dorsi and teres major converge toward the humerus to create this fold, lying posterior to the axillary fossa and lateral to the scapular border. Superficial landmarks of the posterior shoulder and upper back frame the region, with the fold positioned inferior to the glenohumeral joint and superior to the posterolateral chest wall. Skin and subcutaneous tissue are preserved to emphasize surface anatomy. Posterior orientation matters because many palpable and surgically relevant landmarks sit in the folds rather than in the hollow of the armpit. The posterior axillary fold guides posterior-approach dissections and flap planning (latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap), and it is inspected clinically for asymmetry after axillary node dissection or breast surgery. Nerve-related deficits can also announce themselves here, for example loss of posterior fold bulk with thoracodorsal nerve injury affecting latissimus dorsi. Use this illustration in anatomy teaching on the shoulder girdle and axillary boundaries, in breast and reconstructive surgery texts discussing the latissimus dorsi flap and axillary clearance, or in physical examination materials focused on surface landmarks and postoperative inspection of the underarm. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
