Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect, the arterial tree of the adult male head and upper thorax is traced in red against a translucent skull, cervical spine, and upper rib cage. The common carotid artery ascends in the neck anterior to the cervical vertebral bodies, then bifurcates near the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into the internal carotid artery coursing deep toward the carotid canal and the external carotid artery giving off facial and scalp branches. Posterior to the carotid sheath, the vertebral artery climbs through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae toward the foramen magnum, while proximal segments of the subclavian artery feed the vertebral and cervical branches at the root of the neck. Small-caliber arterioles are suggested distally within the face and calvaria. Clean relationships. Easy to teach. A lateral x-ray style rendering is the clearest way to communicate depth, because you can follow the carotid system as it passes from the neck into the cranial base while also appreciating the vertebral artery’s protected course within the transverse processes. That anatomy maps directly to high-stakes clinical work: carotid endarterectomy targets the carotid bifurcation and proximal internal carotid, and iatrogenic injury to nearby hypoglossal and vagus nerves is often explained using this same lateral corridor. The configuration also supports stroke teaching, linking carotid stenosis and embolic anterior circulation infarcts with vertebrobasilar insufficiency when posterior circulation flow is compromised. Use it for gross anatomy and neuroanatomy lectures on head and neck vasculature, for radiology teaching files that introduce CT angiography and Doppler carotid ultrasound orientation, or for surgical education materials covering carotid exposure and cervical vascular control. It also fits patient-facing stroke education where a single side profile clarifies where plaque forms and why symptoms differ by territory. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
