Description

Running along the superior border of the scapula, the suprascapular vein courses in the posterior triangle of the neck toward the root of the neck, where it typically drains into the external jugular vein or, less commonly, the subclavian venous system. The vessel lies posterior and lateral to the internal jugular vein and crosses deep to the platysma and superficial cervical fascia, tracking near the omohyoid (inferior belly) as it approaches the clavicle. At the suprascapular notch it relates closely to the superior transverse scapular ligament, with the vein commonly passing superior to the ligament in parallel with the suprascapular artery, while the suprascapular nerve runs inferior to it. Bony landmarks in this view logically include the clavicle, scapular spine, acromion, and cervical vertebrae. For teaching shoulder and neck drainage, this vein is a practical bridge between scapular-region venous plexuses and the jugular system, and it helps explain why superficial neck venous patterns vary between individuals. Its relationship to the suprascapular notch matters when discussing suprascapular nerve entrapment, because operative decompression and arthroscopic work near the notch demand a clear mental map of the artery and vein that can bleed briskly and obscure the field. Small vessel, real consequences. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy modules to orient students to posterior cervical venous tributaries, and in surgical education materials covering suprascapular notch release, clavicular approaches, or neck dissections where external jugular tributaries are encountered and ligated. It also suits atlas plates and publisher content that needs a clean, anatomically named depiction of the suprascapular vein within the shoulder girdle context.
