Description
Profile sectioning of an adult Black woman’s head and upper neck reveals the cranial cavity and face in lateral orientation, with the skull outlining the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital bones and the mandible positioned inferior and anterior to the external acoustic meatus. Superficial facial musculature such as the masseter and buccinator sits lateral to the oral cavity, while the parotid region overlies the posterior ramus of the mandible where the facial nerve (CN VII) branches fan anteriorly across the cheek. Deep to the sternocleidomastoid, the common carotid artery ascends in the carotid sheath and bifurcates near the angle of the mandible into the internal and external carotid arteries, accompanied by the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve (CN X). Color-coded vessels and cranial nerves run in parallel but diverge at key foramina and soft tissue planes. Lateral head and neck anatomy matters because small shifts in depth change the structure at risk. Parotidectomy and open reduction of mandibular fractures place the temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches of CN VII in the operative field, and this view makes their superficial course relative to the parotid gland and masseter easy to teach. The carotid bifurcation and adjacent hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) are central landmarks in carotid endarterectomy, where plaque at the internal carotid origin can precipitate embolic stroke if not managed correctly. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy lectures, cranial nerve teaching tables, surgical anatomy figures in otolaryngology and maxillofacial texts, and patient-facing diagrams explaining facial nerve injury patterns or carotid disease in clinic. A clean reference for lateral relationships. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
