Description
Oriented from an inferior vantage, the rendering centers on the infraclavicular fossa (Mohrenheim’s fossa) at the junction of the anterior shoulder and upper thorax in an adult Black male. The clavicle forms the superior border, while the deltoid lies lateral and the pectoralis major occupies the medial and anterior chest wall, their interval defining the deltopectoral triangle and groove. Just deep to this surface corridor, the coracoid process sits anterior to the glenohumeral joint, with the axillary artery and vein and the cords of the brachial plexus positioned posterior to pectoralis minor as they pass from the cervicoaxillary canal into the proximal upper limb. Clinically, this angle maps the approach corridor for infraclavicular access to the axillary or subclavian vein, where needle trajectory and clavicular undersurface are practical constraints and pneumothorax becomes the complication everyone is trying to avoid. The deltopectoral groove is also the familiar path for cephalic vein cutdown and for creating pacemaker or ICD pockets, and it is the surface landmark region where clavicle fractures and callus can secondarily contribute to thoracic outlet type symptoms by crowding the neurovascular bundle. Surface anatomy matters here. Small changes in arm abduction alter the deltopectoral interval and the perceived depth of the infraclavicularis plane. Use this asset for teaching regional anatomy of the shoulder girdle and upper chest wall in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal courses, or for surgical and procedural publications covering central venous access, deltopectoral approaches, and device implantation planning in diverse patient populations.
