Description
Medial ankle anatomy is presented in lateral profile, with the distal tibia terminating at the medial malleolus superiorly and the talus seated inferiorly within the tibiotalar (ankle) joint. Anterior to the malleolus, the contour tracks toward the talar neck and navicular region, while posteriorly the outline suggests the retromalleolar groove where the posterior tibial tendon normally courses. Inferior and slightly posterior, the calcaneus forms the hindfoot, with the sustentaculum tali lying medial to the subtalar joint line. A bright blue kinesiology tape band encircles the ankle, sitting superficial to the deltoid ligament complex and the structures of the tarsal tunnel. That medial corridor matters clinically because it concentrates stabilizers and neurovascular structures in a tight space: the deltoid ligament resists eversion and external rotation, the posterior tibial tendon supports the medial longitudinal arch, and the tibial nerve with posterior tibial vessels passes posterior to the medial malleolus. Pain or paresthesia in this distribution raises the differential of tarsal tunnel syndrome, often provoked by overpronation, varicosities, ganglion cysts, or scarring after ankle sprain. This is also the side you inspect when medial malleolar fractures, deltoid ligament tears, or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction drive hindfoot valgus and acquired flatfoot. Landmarks are unforgiving. Use this asset in sports medicine and physical therapy materials discussing ankle taping, return-to-play protocols, or medial ankle pain, and in orthopedic or podiatry teaching when orienting learners to the tarsus, talus, and joint-line palpation. It also fits patient-facing education where skin tone representation and kinesiology tape placement need to be explicit. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
