Description

Rendered in an X-ray style, this animation traces the duodenum from the pylorus into the duodenal bulb (pars superior), then follows the C-shaped sweep of the descending (second), horizontal (third), and ascending (fourth) parts toward the duodenojejunal flexure. As the sequence advances, the lumen is outlined in a radiographic manner, with the proximal segment lying right of midline and anterior to the vertebral column before the third part crosses more medially and the fourth part rises to the left. Spatial relationships are reinforced by the characteristic curve around the pancreatic head and the superior-to-inferior drop of the second part before the transverse course of the third. Motion is the point. For clinical teaching, the animated progression of a contrast column through the bulb and along the descending and horizontal segments clarifies where pathology tends to declare itself on fluoroscopy: peptic ulcer disease at the duodenal cap, postbulbar narrowing, and deformity from chronic scarring. The second part’s fixed position against the pancreatic head helps explain why pancreatic carcinoma or pancreatitis can produce extrinsic impression and proximal gastric outlet symptoms, and why the third part may be compressed between the superior mesenteric artery and aorta in SMA syndrome. Seeing the lumen fill and contour over time makes intermittent spasm versus true stenosis easier to conceptualize than a single frame. Use this clip in gastrointestinal anatomy blocks, radiology teaching files on upper GI series, and surgical education that maps duodenal segments for pyloroplasty, duodenal ulcer repair, or approach to the ligament of Treitz during small-bowel obstruction workup. It also supports patient-facing explanations of why symptoms localize to the epigastrium when the bulb is involved despite a retroperitoneal distal duodenum. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
