Description

Beginning in the epigastrium, the animation traces the small intestine from the C shaped duodenum curving around the pancreatic head to the proximal jejunum as it emerges at the duodenojejunal flexure (ligament of Treitz) in the left upper quadrant. Jejunal loops then occupy the central and left abdomen, suspended by mesentery, before the sequence follows progressively more inferior and right sided ileal loops toward the ileocecal junction. Mesenteric attachment and loop orientation shift as the camera advances distally, keeping anterior abdominal wall relationships clear while the bowel drapes over the posterior abdominal structures. Orientation stays consistent. For teaching, seeing the duodenum’s largely retroperitoneal course contrasted with the intraperitoneal jejunum and ileum helps explain why duodenal perforation can track into the retroperitoneum while most small bowel perforations contaminate the peritoneal cavity. Clinically, the ordered progression of loops supports discussions of CT interpretation in small bowel obstruction, where proximal jejunal dilation and distal ileal decompression guide the search for an adhesive transition point or internal hernia, and it clarifies why Crohn disease most often involves the terminal ileum near the ileocecal valve. Following the bowel segment by segment also reinforces the relevance of the ligament of Treitz as a landmark separating upper from lower gastrointestinal bleeding and framing the region at risk in superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Use this animation in undergraduate gross anatomy and GI modules, radiology teaching files that pair abdominal CT with loop distribution, and surgical education around exploratory laparotomy or laparoscopy where running the bowel from the ileocecal junction to the ligament of Treitz is routine.
