Description

Seen in mid-sagittal section, the uterine fundus, body, and cervix are opened to expose the endometrial lining, central uterine cavity, surrounding myometrium, and outer serosal contour, with the endocervical canal continuing inferiorly toward the vagina. An endometrioid-type malignant tumor arises from the endometrium and progressively thickens the mucosa, projecting into the cavity while distorting the normally smooth anterior and posterior walls. As the sequence advances, the mass extends deeper, tracking from the endometrial surface into the underlying myometrium and approaching the internal os. Orientation stays consistent. Growth is the narrative. Endometrial carcinoma is the most common gynecologic malignancy in many populations, and depth of myometrial invasion is one of the clearest anatomic correlates of risk for lymphovascular invasion and nodal spread to pelvic and para-aortic chains. The animation format makes that staging concept legible by showing stepwise transition from an intracavitary neoplasm to infiltrative disease, a progression that is hard to communicate with a single still because the interface between endometrium, junctional zone, and myometrium is where interpretation often fails on ultrasound and even MRI. You can also relate the expanding, friable tumor surface to abnormal uterine bleeding, including postmenopausal bleeding, the common clinical trigger for biopsy. Use this sequence in gross anatomy labs introducing uterine wall layers, in pathology and gynecologic oncology teaching on FIGO staging and surgical planning (total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, sentinel node mapping), or as a visual adjunct in patient-facing counseling about why invasion depth changes treatment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
